Classification of crimes. There are numerous classifications for crimes. Crimes can be categorized based on their topic matter. For instance, crimes like violence, rape, and assault often result in physical harm to the victim, which is why they fall under the category of “crime against the person.” If a crime tends to hurt a person by depriving him or her of property or by damaging property, it might be categorized as a “crime against property.” The main purpose of these classifications is convenience; they are not necessary for understanding criminal law.

Misdemeanors
