ROLES OF POLICEMEN

Roles of policemen. The incumbent carries out duties about the following: the control and direction of vehicular traffic; the enforcement of federal, state, and municipal laws; the protection of life and property; and the maintenance of public peace and order.

ROLES OF POLICEMEN

1. Patrols the designated neighborhood throughout a daily shift either by foot or in a patrol car.

2. Respond to help requests; offer assistance to stranded or disabled drivers or residents in a variety of methods, such as pushing or changing tires.

3. Examines and investigates suspicious conditions by checking doors and windows and by examining the interior of both occupied and unoccupied buildings and homes; recognizes issues related to crime and disorder.

4. Pay attention to warning systems for indications of unauthorized entry. Examines reports of domestic conflicts and disruptions in public areas; if required, uses force to maintain or restore order.

5. Verifies cars with reports of stolen automobiles.

6. Functions as a public relations intermediary between the public and the Police Department; frequently interacts with residents in designated areas to obtain data and supporting documentation about issues and concerns.

7. Works together with individuals and other governmental and non-governmental organizations to find solutions to issues; creates maps of crime data and offers preventative methods for use by neighborhood watch groups and other organizations. 8. Attends relevant schools and training programs.

Traffic control and investigation of traffic accidents:

1. Notifies the appropriate departments of dangerous road conditions and malfunctioning traffic control devices.

2. Assign traffic directions in an emergency.

3. Issues traffic fines and administers field testing for suspected intoxication.

4. Makes further emergency service calls as required.

5. Provides first responder care in an emergency if required.

Investigates criminal cases:

1. Performs initial or thorough investigations.

2. Tracks down and interrogates possible and actual witnesses.

3. Uses photographs and records to identify suspects.

4. Researches a suspect’s history, criminal history, and method of operation before questioning.

5. Conduct field interrogations with suspects and obtain statements or depositions.

Apprehends and arrests suspects:

1. Obtains an arrest warrant after filing a complaint.

2. Serves arrest warrant and conducts a subject search.

3. Engages in foot or vehicle chase as needed to subdue a stubborn individual.

4. Explains suspects’ Miranda rights.
