Our is the one item on our list that you should definitely not do when traveling. It is a common annoyance for us to stroll through the streets and see trash on the pavement or roadway.

The most unsettling type of tourism related environmental pollution is the discarding of paper towels, plastic cutlery, and cigarette butts in parks, beaches, and other public areas.

That is really heartbreaking. What lessons do we want this to teach our kids? If we genuinely cared about the environment and wanted a better future for future generations, we would be more aware of this. If you can’t find a trash can, bring your trash back to hotel. Take care of the place as you found it.

2. Taking photos of locals without their permission

I always make careful to get someone’s consent before snapping their picture. That’s not to suggest that you have to ask everyone’s permission (how polite of you!) if you want to take a picture of a monument with a hundred people gathered in front of it. I believe that it is important for us to keep in mind that just because we are on vacation, it does not imply that we should forgo being polite and considerate.

3. Dressing like a tourist

When I look around, I can usually spot a tourist from a mile afar based on their attire.

• Khaki shorts and white linen tops, colourful, flowy dresses that are probably more in fashion in your country than the one you’re visiting.

5. Carrying valuables ( travelling )

Carrying costly jewellery, cameras, and other valuable stuff can make you a target for pickpockets. It is advisable to leave any priceless belongings at home, even if theft is not an issue where you are about to go. It is very simple to misplace valuables when on the go.
