Epiglottitis is a disease associated with epiglottis, which is inflammation of the epiglottis. It can be a serious condition, often caused by bacterial infection, and may lead to difficulty breathing. Vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) has significantly reduced the incidence of epiglottitis.

It is primarily caused by a bacterial infection, commonly due to Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) bacteria. Other bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae or Streptococcus pyogenes, can also be responsible. It’s important to note that viral infections can cause epiglottitis in some cases.

Symptoms of epiglottitis include:

1. Sudden Onset: The condition often develops rapidly.

2. Severe Sore Throat: Painful swallowing is common.

3. Drooling: Difficulty swallowing may lead to drooling.

4. Difficulty Breathing: As the epiglottis swells, it can obstruct the airway, causing breathing difficulties.

5. High Fever: Elevated body temperature is typical.

6. Stridor: A high-pitched sound during breathing may be present, especially during inhalation.

It is imperative that someone with epiglottitis receive medical assistance right once because the illness can worsen quickly and could cause respiratory collapse.

Epiglottitis is a medical emergency, and it requires prompt attention from healthcare professionals. It’s not a condition for home remedies. If you suspect someone has epiglottitis or is experiencing severe symptoms like difficulty breathing, drooling, or stridor, seek immediate medical assistance.

Do not attempt to examine the throat or provide oral medications, as these actions could worsen the situation. The focus should be on getting professional medical help as quickly as possible.
