Folliculitis is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles—the tiny openings where hair grows—become infected or inflamed. It can appear anywhere on the body where hair is present, but it’s most common on the scalp, face, neck, chest, back, thighs, and buttocks.
Causes of Folliculitis
Folliculitis is usually caused by:
– Bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus
– Fungi or yeast infections
– Irritation from shaving or tight clothing
– Clogged pores from sweat, oil, or cosmetics
– Hot tubs that are not properly sanitized (known as “hot tub folliculitis”)
People with weakened immune systems, diabetes, or acne are more likely to get folliculitis.
Symptoms
– Red, swollen bumps (like pimples) around hair follicles
– Itching, tenderness, or a burning sensation
– Pus-filled blisters that may break open and crust over
– Pain or discomfort in affected areas
– In severe cases, large boils or scarring may develop
Types of Folliculitis

1. Superficial folliculitis – affects only the upper part of the follicle and usually heals quickly
2. Deep type – affects the whole hair follicle and may be more painful and long-lasting
Treatment Options
– Mild cases:
•Use warm compresses to reduce pain and draw out pus
•Apply over-the-counter antibiotic or antiseptic creams
•Practice good hygiene and avoid shaving affected areas
– Moderate to severe cases:
•Prescription-strength antibiotic or antifungal creams
•Oral antibiotics for widespread or deep infections
•Antibacterial washes or medicated shampoos for scalp folliculitis
Prevention Tips
– Shave in the direction of hair growth using clean razors
– Avoid tight clothing that traps sweat and friction
– Shower after sweating or using pools/hot tubs
– Keep skin clean and moisturized
– Avoid sharing personal items like towels or razors
When to See a Doctor
– If the condition doesn’t improve in a few days
– And If it spreads or worsens
– If boils or large, painful lumps develop
– If you have recurring episodes
Folliculitis is usually not serious, but it can be irritating and uncomfortable. With good hygiene, gentle care, and timely treatment, most cases heal quickly without lasting effects.
