CAUSES OF GERM CELL TUMOR

CAUSES OF GERM CELL TUMOR

Causes of germ cell tumor. In germ cells, germ cell tumors grow. These are the bodily cells that give rise to eggs and sperm. Since the majority of germ cells are found in the ovary or testicular, germ cell tumors most frequently form there. However, germ cells from your development in the womb can occasionally be found in other parts of your body. A mass composed of germ cells, also known as reproductive cells, is known as a germ cell tumor.

CAUSES OF GERM CELL TUMOR

The word “germinate,” which means to mature, is shortened to “germ.” For women, germ cells finally mature into eggs. Sperm develop from germ cells in men. Related, germ cell cancers typically develop in the ovaries, which produce eggs, and the testicles, which produce sperm. Less frequently, germ cell tumors develop in the brain, lower back, abdomen, chest, and tailbone in addition to the ovaries and testicles. We refer to these tumors as extragonadal tumors. Children, teenagers, and young adults are most frequently affected by germ cell cancers.

Types

Tumors that contain bone, muscle, hair, or teeth are called teratomas. They could be either immature or mature. The most prevalent kind of ovarian germ cell tumors are mature teratomas, also known as dermoid cysts. Usually, they are harmless. Immature teratomas are often malignant, and they grow swiftly. The cells found in yolk sac tumors, also known as endodermal sinus tumors, resemble those found in a developing embryo. These tumors are malignant, and they quickly spread to other organs and lymph nodes. The most frequent malignant germ cell tumor identified in children is a yolk sac tumor.

Signs

Testicular germ cell tumors cause symptoms similar to those of testicular cancer, such as: Pain or heaviness in your scrotum; a solid, firm lump in a testicle that grows larger (with or without pain); an oddly shaped testicle; back pain; pelvic discomfort or pain; a painful mass in your ovary; a swollen belly (abdomen); abdominal pain (similar to appendicitis); irregular vaginal bleeding; nausea.

Causes

In a human embryo in development, normal germ cells form. These cells eventually develop into egg or sperm cells when they move to the embryo’s ovaries or testicles. Germ cell tumors, on the other hand, are made up of cells that do not mature into complete eggs or sperm. Instead, the germ cells divide erratically and develop into a tumor in your testicles or ovaries. The germ cells that cause extragonadal tumors spread to strange locations throughout your body, such as your brain, stomach, lower back, tailbone, and chest. What causes germ cells to develop in this manner is unknown to researchers.

Treatment

Surgery: The main treatment for germ cell tumors is surgery. Your doctor may do a salpingo-oophorectomy, which involves removing the entire ovary and fallopian tubes, or an ovarian cystectomy, which involves removing the tumor from the affected ovary. Your doctor will remove the affected testicle if you have testicular cancer.
Chemotherapy: This treatment uses medications to either kill or stop the division of cancer cells. If your doctor is unable to safely remove the tumor or if it has spread to other parts of your body, you may be given chemotherapy. Even if the cancer cells are not visible on imaging after surgery, you may still undergo chemotherapy to eradicate any cancer cells that may remain. The majority of germ cell tumor types respond well to chemotherapy.

Summary

A mass composed of germ cells, also known as reproductive cells, is known as a germ cell tumor. What a germ cell tumor diagnosis means for you or your kid can be explained by your healthcare professional. Tumors of germ cells are complicated.
